Do you feel like Astrill app UI is a bit dated? Would you like to give it a facelift? Are there things bothering you in the current layout? Do you have ideas for an amazing new UI that every Astrill user will fall in love with?

Current Astrill VPN desktop application design

Good news. We feel that our app needs some UI refining too, and who better to ask than our valuable user-base who uses Astrill app daily. You know what you want from the app and you know what could be done better design-wise.

We announce Astrill app redesign contest.

Until the end of August, we will be collecting your designs and sketches. You can submit your work to facelift@astrill.com until August 31st 2019. We will publish the top 10 on our blog in September and prizes for the best contestants are following:

  • 1st place – 1 year Astrill VPN VIP membership
  • 2nd place – 6 months Astrill VPN membership
  • 3rd place – 3 months Astrill VPN membership
  • 4th – 10th place – 1 month Astrill VPN membership

But wait – there is more. If we pick your design and use it in our new app, you will be awarded with lifetime Astrill VPN membership for your valuable contribution.

Details and suggestions

All designs must be submitted in high resolution in PNG or SVG format. To be considered for the competition, the design must include

  • login screen
  • main screen with ON/OFF button
  • expanded server-list selection (if you use specific flag-pack, let us know which one)
  • settings page

The following animations should also be included:

  • login animation
  • connection animation (when VPN is turning ON)
  • general busy animation

You can create animations as animated SVG, PNG (apng) or GIF files. SVG would be the best as it can scale to match DPI of the screen.

Good design considerations
(you don’t need to follow them but in our opinion it makes application more usable):

  • The things user needs every day are easily accessible – for example settings which are used frequently are good to be located in the main UI, tray menu / menu bar menus, etc.
  • Account expiration and version number are useful to be displayed

We are looking for a unified design for mobile and desktop application, so take this into consideration when making your design. The app must be user friendly on both desktop (mouse+keyboard) and mobile (touch) environments.

Conditions:

  • All applicants must submit own original creative work (not copied from others)
  • All icons / images used must be without copyright
  • UI must be in English

When new Astrill for iOS will be released?

    • admin 2019-07-09 10:53

soon, ideally by the end of this months or during the next one

  • T 2019-07-08 22:39

Sounds to me that you guys are lazy and want someone else to do your job for you.

    • admin 2019-07-09 10:55

Integrating PNG/SVG design into mac/linux/windows and possibly Android/iOS apps is definitely the harder part of the work. We are not lazy, we want to know what our users think and what you would like changed and what kept as is.

    Thanks for this Awesome contest.
It’s not the price that’s cool or the awards. But the fact that we get a say in what needs to be added. I’ll give this a shot, and hopefully, it can inspire your team to add some minor details, especially for the iOS users (their version is just horrible 🙂 )

    Hi, Astrill.
I like this VPN app really.
I would like to only request one thing. I hope you don’t remove the connection speed graph in the new design. It is really helpful to me.

    Thanks.

Excited! Finally a UI rework opportunity AND potential free membership.

  • Russ Fischer 2019-07-09 04:34

    Mission accepted!

  • Aslan 2019-07-09 04:38

7 individual designs for the ‘chance’ of winning something that comes with no extra expense to you and even then hardly measure up to 1 to 2 days of payed work…

I hope you’ll be receiving designs worth your money,
    Aslan

We have designers in our team and it is not an issue with not wanting to pay for designs. This is supposed to be a competition to get feedback and ideas from users who use our app daily and know exactly what they want changed. Its not like we get a PNG with idea and save thousands on it. The design will have to be further edited, parsed and most importantly integrated. This is a competition for designers who enjoy designing apps and using Astrill, not for people who want to make easy money.

Or you could hire a designer and pay someone to do the work?

    • admin 2019-07-09 10:59

Yes we could and even when we pick the winner, we most definitely will (unless we cooperate with the author directly). There is much more work to be done than submitting an image with few screens. After a “sketch” is accepted as a winner, the hardest part of the job has to be done – the integration itself.

I’ve redesigned the UI about 4 years ago including Desktop and Mobile client and published on my dribbble(wanglong) account.
