Astrill has released Astrill SSL VPN

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Astrill SSL VPN uses OpenVPN SSL protocol, one of the most secure encryptions available today. This VPN is suitable for Desktop/Laptop computers (Windows, Macintosh and Linux) as well as many LinkSys (“DD-WRT”) based WiFi routers. All the traffic from all your applications will be tunneled through Astrill servers (web browsers, email clients, download managers, BitTorrent, etc…). This VPN is prefered if you wish to download torrents.

OpenVPN is an easy-to-use, robust, and highly configurable SSL VPN (Virtual Private Network) daemon which can be used to securely link two or more private networks using an encrypted tunnel over the Internet. It uses SSL/TLS security for encryption and is capable of traversing network address translators (NATs) and firewalls.

OpenVPN GUI lets you run OpenVPN without this console window. Instead you get an icon in the taskbar from which you can control OpenVPN to connect/disconnect your VPN tunnels.

OpenVPN GUI for Windows

Tunnelblick for Mac OS X

OpenVPN uses only a single port, therefore it is extremely firewall-friendly. Using UDP here is favourable as running TCP over TCP is generally a bad idea. NAT traversal or firewall doesn’t even have to be configured, the protocol is designed in such a way that it simply doesn’t need to care about NAT. We recommend that you try both UDP and TCP, and see what works best for you.

Astrill 1.0.5.1120 Beta Released

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

New Astrill has fixed some problems with H ulu as well as improved some things. By default, new version will install Firefox addon and set system global proxy whenever Astrill is enabled. Surfing in Firefox should be faster than before. Please also check Firefox 3.6.4 issues with Flash which can slow down Firefox a lot.

Firefox addon has a few functions – setting Firefox proxy automatically when Astrill is enabled, speeding up surfing and visual indicator – whenever Astrill is enabled you will see Astrill logo in Firefox address bar.

If you don’t like this visual indicator, you can disable it in Astrill Settings->Advanced panel:

If you’d like to make Astrill work like old version, uncheck option “Set System Proxy” and “Show logo in Firefox”.

This new version has “Reset Settings” option in the Help menu which is useful if you change a lot of options and your Astrill doesn’t work correctly anymore. You can now easily reset settings to defaults.

Astrill 1.0.5 Review

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

We are pleased to announce new Astrill 1.0.5 which comes with a few new exciting features:

Video Accelerator

Video Accelerator accelerates streaming video from sites like Youtube, Vimeo, Vevo, Hulu, etc… thus letting you watch streaming videos without buffering (even in China).  Of course, your internet connection needs to be fast enough. We recommend 4 mbit/sec connection to be able to watch 1080p High Definition videos from Youtube. Video Accelerator option is available from the Settings menu and is enabled by default. If you have problems like not able to load Youtube videos when Video Accelerator is enabled, please send the video link to our developers so we can work on a solution.

Stream Recorder

Stream Recorder (a.k.a. Media Recorder) let you save streaming media (video and music files) from sites like Youtube, Vevo, Vimeo, Pandora, etc… to your harddisk. This way you can watch your videos offline any time.  To use Stream Recorder, you need to enable it in the Settings Menu. Afterwards visit some video page on Youtube for example. When recording starts, Astrill tray icon will have a small blinking red star which indicates recording mode. Once recording is finished, a balloon will popup with name of the saved file. By default, files are saved to your Desktop in folder “WebRecorder”. You can watch saved videos with FLV Player on Windows (http://www.applian.com/flvplayer/) and with VLC player on Macintosh (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). Please note that recording will not start if a video is cached in your browser cache, so if you have watched a video a few minutes ago and it doesn’t record, please clear your browser cache and reload web page.

Smart Mode

Smart Mode (a.k.a. GFW Mode) is made specifically for customers in China with a goal to accelerate web surfing. When Smart Mode is enabled (in the Settings Menu), only blocked sites will be opened through Astrill servers, while all other sites will be loaded directly. We maintain a list of blocked sites for customers and update it automatically. Smart Mode is available currently in all countries, however in the final version, we will keep this option only for China. This option is useless if you live for example in Saudi Arabia.

Ads Blocker

Ads Blocker is used to block annoying ads. It works in all browsers. Ads Blocker consists of a set of rules which are compatible with Ad Block Plus for Firefox.

Astrill 1.0.5 is currently available for Windows and Mac OS X only. Linux version will be available soon. You can download this version from our download page.

If you experience any problems with new version, don’t hesitate to contact our developers at rd@astrill.com (Research & Development department).

Enjoy new Astrill,
