Astrill Router Applet v.2.8.4 Released

September 7th, 2013

We have released new version 2.8.4 of our router applet. Now you can select encryption – from Blowfish 128-bit, up to AES-256 bit.

Encryption options for OpenVPN UDP/TCP protocols:

  1. Default (Blowfish 128-bit)
  2. Strong (AES 128-bit)
  3. Military (AES 256-bit)
  4. Disable (Fast)

In ver 2.8.4 it’s also possible to turn off encryption which is useful only if you don’t care about security and want to achieve best speed.

Router hardware CPU is very slow, therefore turning encryption off will improve the speed considerably. If you are in China, DO NOT do this.

If you prefer security and faster speeds, you can use RouterPro protocol instead which is optimized to be 2+ times faster than regular OpenVPN protocol.

New Feature: VPN Accelerator for Routers

April 16th, 2013

Accelerator option on Astrill applet page, can potentially increase overall VPN speed on your router.

Minimum requirements for accelerator option to work fast:
- Router with fast CPU, 400MHz-600MHz (accelerator relays totally on CPU, the faster CPU the better performance)
- Your DD-WRT or Tomato router must be RouterPro VPN supported. (This means it uses our customized OpenVPN binary file. It works both with OpenVPN and RouterPro VPN protocols.)
- Router with 8MB flash or more (needed for Astrill OpenVPN binary to be installed on your router)

If you router is not RouterPro VPN compatible, accelerator option will not be shown on your router.

Below is a performance test with accelerator option and without accelerator option.
A) Accelerator ON
B) Accelerator OFF
